Black Piranha tops Sydney Spring Sale

The 2011 Inglis Sydney Spring Thoroughbred Sale was conducted at Newmarket today, with dual Group 1 winner Black Piranha the star, selling for $245,000.

At sale end, 90 horses had been sold at a clearance rate of 92%, for a gross tally of $792,850.

Sold to dissolve a partnership, Black Piranha (Lot 107) attracted plenty of interest, with bids coming for all around the Newmarket ring. The 2009 & 2010 Stradbroke winner was finally knocked down to Cameron Cooke Bloodstock for $245,000.

“There was plenty of tough competition about, but I’m delighted to be able to pick such a high quality galloper up for my Melbourne based client”, Cooke said.

“He looked in sparkling condition in the ring and his form has been outstanding, with his run the other day to finish fourth in the George Main a top effort.

“He will head to Melbourne to be aimed at some of the big spring carnival races, followed by possible trips to New Zealand then Dubai next year,” Cooke added.

Earlier in the day stakes placed Anabaa mare Turnstiles (Lot 14), a daughter of Group 3 winner Zabeel’s Angel, had plenty of admirers with Rick Connolly Bloodstock having to go to $120,000 to secure the mare. “Opportunities to buy into a top class galloper in good form like Black Piranha don’t come across too often, resulting in strong competition from numerous parties”, Inglis Sydney Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy said.

“Well-bred fillies and better performed racehorses also sold very well, with online bidding again playing a strong part in the excellent clearance rate of 92%.

“We wish all new connections the best of luck with their purchases for the rest of the Spring Racing Carnival and breeding season”, D’Arcy concluded.

Horses passed in today are still available for sale via Inglis’ Make an Offer Service, which features a photo of each lot open to offers.

Attention now turns to Inglis’ Australian Racehorse Sale during the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne on Tuesday October 25. For both raced and unraced horses the sale has been strategically placed between the Cox Plate and Derby Day to ensure maximum exposure. Entry forms can be downloaded HERE.
