Demand For Quality At Great Southern Sale

The Broodmare Session concluded on the third day of the 2015 Inglis Great Southern Sale, grossing $2,290,900 on 196 Lots sold. Following the trend set by the Weanling Sessions, strong increases were recorded across key metrics.

“Overall, the broodmare section has achieved very satisfactory results. There was again good competition on the better quality mares but the sale also highlighted the widening gap between commercial and non-commercial mares,” said Inglis’ Victorian Director Peter Heagney.

The day’s top priced Lots came late in the day when two mares from the supplementary session reached $125,000. The first was Lamiraqui (Lot 747) (pictured) which Eliza Park International secured from the draft of Rosemont Stud, which topped the Vendors' Table (3 or more sold) by average ($29,600).

The daughter of Choisir is the dam of two winners including Group 1 performer Pressing, and is carrying a full sibling from an early September cover to Sebring.

“She is probably the best mare in the catalogue in terms of pedigree so $125,000 was reasonable value we thought," said Eliza Park International’s Phil Marshall.

“She’s in foal to one of the hottest sires at the moment, carrying a full brother or sister to a stakes-winner so she’s got a lot of commercial appeal. If you get a nice foal out of her you can get to the best sales in the country.“ Marshall said.

“We’re not sure yet who we’ll send her to. We’ll go home and work out mating plans, and we’ll give her every opportunity, that’s for sure,” Marshall added.

The Blevic mare Streetcar Stella (Lot 760) carrying a September cover to I Am Invincible sold from the draft of Stonehouse Thoroughbreds to Sheamus Mills Bloodstock on behalf of Mark Corbo and Tim Davis of Star Witness Bloodstock, also for $125,000.

“The mare will head straight to Widden Stud to foal down, and will visit Star Witness in the spring,” said Mills.

“Opportunities to buy mares in foal to I Am Invincible are reasonably rare these days, especially ones as good looking as her. Obviously we are excited to see the foal, and we’ll decide at a later date whether to sell it as a weanling or a yearling.” Mills said.

Steve Brem signed for the third top-priced Lot, Danrego (Lot 741) on behalf of Cathy Hains' Burnewang North.

The Danzero mare was sold in foal to hot first season sire Zoustar, from the draft of Phoenix Broodmare Farm, which finished the session in the lead of the Vendors’ Table (3 or more sold) by both aggregate ($435,550) and a close second by average ($29,037), having sold all of their 15 offerings.

“It’s obviously a very attractive first season service. She’s a mare who has done her job and she’s only had five foals, so we look forward to getting a nice healthy foal out of her,” said Brem.

“Burnewang has had a pretty successful weanling sale here, so as far as the foal goes that option is definitely on the board,” Brem said.

Leading buyer (number of Lots) at the sale for the third consecutive day is Paul Willetts Bloodstock. The New Zealand agent signed for seven mares for a number of clients, outlaying a total of $102,650. Other buyers to purchase four or more Lots from the Broodmare Session include Victorians Ribblesdale Stud and Jacka Investments Pty Ltd, and Damon Gabbedy’s Belmont Bloodstock.

Horses passed in this week are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.

The fourth and final day of the 2015 Inglis Great Southern Sale will offer yearlings (Lots 620 to 639), Unbroken Stock (Lots 640 to 644), Raced Fillies and Mares (Lots 645 to 693), and Race Colts and Geldings (Lots 694 to 724). 63 supplementary Lots of Racing Stock will conclude the sale (Lots 763 to 825).

The auction will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live and Online Bidding will again be available.
