Pinhooking Profits Shine Light On Weanling Sale

More than 200 pinhooking opportunities will avail themselves to buyers at the Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale, where Platinum (X-Rayed), Select and General Weanling Sessions will be held on Sunday 1 May at Newmarket.

The early timing of the sale provides a major advantage to investors looking to secure quality youngstock ahead of the 2017 yearling sales.

"This year's catalogue is brimming with select sale pedigrees showcasing the progeny of proven sires such as Fastnet Rock, Sebring, Choisir and I Am Invincible, and joined by the first offerings by Zoustar, Dundeel, Sizzling, Eurozone, Declaration Of War, Shamus Award and many others," said Inglis National Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy.

“Pinhookers who secure their speculations in May will have every chance to maximise on their investments leading into 2017,” said D'Arcy.

The wealth of success that can be found from the Inglis Broodmare and Weanling Sale is exemplified by the outstanding pinhook results of our clients on every level at yearling sales in 2016.

Grange Thoroughbreds’ Gary Mudgway has experienced some particularly impressive results with pinhooks through Inglis sales, most recently with a colt by Choisir out of Aurum Valley, which was consigned by Victoria’s newest thoroughbred venture, Stonehouse Thoroughbreds.

After securing the colt for $35,000 in the first week of May in 2015, Mudgway’s purchase generated a return eight-times that amount, selling to James Harron Bloodstock for $280,000 at the Inglis Premier Yearling Sale less than a year later (pictured).

“I could not have achieved this year’s results without Inglis’ support. Their foresight in supporting professional pinhookers and developing the buying bench at their yearling sales set us up for some really nice profits this year,” said Mudgway.

“Of course we will be back into the fray at the Inglis Broodmare and Weanling Sale next month, we know it’s the best way to get great results next year,” Mudgway said.

Earlier in the year, a colt by Nicconi out of Space Odyssey generated a significant pinhooking return for Davali Thoroughbreds at the Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. Their $15,000 Inglis weanling purchase was secured by Paul Perry for $90,000, a 500% profit in eight months.

At the opposite end of the investment spectrum but with equally as healthy profits to be made, the Yarraman Park-sold Medaglia d’Oro colt out of Kiss The Sun was a significant investment as a weanling at $230,000. The confidence of his purchaser, Roderick Wachman, paid off when Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Maktoum outbid John Foote and George Moore to $875,000 for the colt at the Easter Yearling Sale earlier this month.
