Shooting Star wins $770K Inglis Guineas

The dream of owner Leanne Moore became a reality today when Star Of Octagonal scored a memorable win in the inaugural $770,000 Horsezone.com.au Inglis Guineas at Scone.

Given he was sold at the Scone sale two years ago, STAR OF OCTAGONAL ($23,000 2008 Scone, 3g Octagonal-Joyce) is a most fitting first winner of the Guineas (1600m).

He was purchased out of the Woodlands Stud draft by Singleton based trainer Todd Howlett for Phil and Leanne Moore, who became stable clients after buying a share in a horse at a fund raising auction.

Leanne later had a dream she would race a son of the great Octagonal and the 2008 Scone sale provided that opportunity, with Howlett liking what he saw after making an inspection.

Star Of Octagonal beat subsequent Hawkesbury Guineas winner Neeson in the Group 3 South Pacific Classic at Randwick last month and rather than push on for a re-match with that horse in the Hawkesbury Guineas, Howlett waited until today’s lucrative race.

“Inglis is proud to be associated with a race of such significance on the country circuit and I’m sure Star Of Octagonal will prove a most fitting inaugural winner of the race, as he looks a real horse of the future,” Inglis Commercial Development Manager Matt Rudolph said.

“This inaugural Inglis $2.6million race series started back in October of 2008 with Starspangledbanner winning the Inglis Juvenile and I think we’ve seen an equally exciting prospect close out the series for 2008 graduates at Scone this afternoon.”

Star Of Octagonal is now the winner of three races in six starts, with earnings topping $610,000.

Howlett will now seek Group 1 riches with Star Of Octagonal, striving to join Hot Danish and Small Minds as top level winning graduates of the Scone sale.

This year’s Scone Select Yearling Sale continues on Sunday from 10.30am.

The 10 times Group 1 winning champion Octagonal is represented in Sunday's session by Lot 348, a brown colt from the Danzero mare Frantastic from the family of Champion US mare Azeri.
