Super Saturday updates for Easter

Inglis Yearling Sale graduates took the spoils in four stakes races at Flemington on Super Saturday, a day that featured Group 1 wins by the progeny of sires that are well represented in the upcoming 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Twilight Royale ($45,000 2012 Premier, 2f Testa Rossa-Royal Season) put her connections in the box seat for the $2.4 million Inglis Triple Crown Bonus when leading home an Inglis trifecta in the Group 2 VRC Sire’s Produce Stakes over 1400m.

The daughter of Testa Rossa finished too strongly for Shamus Award and Great Esteem to take her earned to $475,000. A great result for trainer Bjorn Baker who purchased the filly as a yearling for $45,000.

Adelaide based galloper Budriguez ($25,000 2008 Classic, 6g Al Maher-Deni) continued his great recent form when dead-heating with Melbourne Cup favourite Puissance De Lune in the Group 2 VRC Blamey Stakes over 1600m in Melbourne.

The tough David Jolly trained gelding fought all the way to the line under another top front running ride by Craig Williams to split the first place cheque.

“It’s a big imposing straight for front-running horses and he stood up to the mark yet again,” said Craig Williams.

“I always had a lot of respect for the grey horse (PDL) and I could see him in the corner in my eye for enough time that I thought he could get me.

“To my fella’s credit he really dug in but he started to go a little bit right handed so I just thought the last little bit I just had to wrestle him right out so he couldn’t turn his head and that’s probably why we’re here and not in the runners-up stall,” Williams said.

Today’s win takes Budriguez’s earnings to $584,600 which is just a fraction of the $25,000 paid by Jolly for the son of Al Maher from the draft of Widden Stud at the 2008 Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale.

Flying Snitzel ($25,000 2011 Premier, 3f Snitzel-Hula Flight) claimed a very valuable Group 2 victory when taking out the next race on the Super Saturday Flemington card, the VRC Kewney Stakes over 1400m for the three-year-old fillies.

The daughter of Snitzel settled well back in the field before letting down with a dazzling finish to overpower favourite Norzita in the run to the line.

“I’ve been itching to ride here like that for a long time. I didn’t expect her to be last but I knew she would finish off good,” said trainer Gerald Ryan.

“She does need a good firm track underneath her and she has been threatening to win a nice race for a long time.

“We might stay here while the weather is the way it is in Sydney, we might stay here and run in the mile race at Moonee Valley (Sunline Stakes, 22 Mar) and we’ll see how we go but we might end up heading towards Adelaide,” Ryan added.

Purchased by Triple Crown Syndications for just $25,000 from the draft of Bellerive Stud at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale the daughter of Snitzel has earned $314,800 on the track. She is also now a very valuable breeding prospect as a Group Two winning daughter of Group 1 ATC Metropolitan winner Hula Flight.

Triple Crown Syndications were very busy at this year’s Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, purchasing 10 yearlings.

Centennial Park ($P140,000 2007 Easter, 7g Thorn Park-Trephina) closed out the day with a much deserved stakes victory at Flemington when taking out the Listed VRC Super Saturday Stakes over 1400m.

“He has been a good horse, he has had his problems over the years but we picked the right race today,” said trainer David Payne

“I've brought him down a few times. He won the once and he should've won last year, he loves this track,” Payne said

The seven-year-old has been a great campaigner for his connections having won eight times and placed another 10 times from 48 career starts. The son of Thorn Park has netted over $950,000 in earnings, much less than his $150,000 reserve price when offered at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in 2007.

Buyers next chance to Aim Higher with a yearling from Inglis comes up at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale at Newmarket in Sydney on 9, 10 & 11 April.

Again there has been no compromising on pedigree or type accepted into this year’s Easter catalogue, which features substantial representation by all the leading sires, tremendous female family depth and outstanding athletes.

There are 7 yearlings by Budriguez’s sire Al Maher and 20 by Flying Snitzel’s sire Snitzel catalogued for the Easter Sale.

Catalogued are 10 yearlings by O’Reilly, the sire of Group 1 VRC Newmarket Handicap winner Shamexpress.
