The hot run being enjoyed by Darley sires over the weekend extended to Canberra on Sunday where unheralded Canny Lad gelding You’re Canny ran down hot favourite Karuta Queen to win the Listed Black Opal Stakes.

It was always expected a local horse would win the prestigious juvenile event this year, it just wasn’t the Gratz Vella trained You’re Canny that was the one punters saw doing it.

Unbeaten in four previous starts including the Magic Million 2YO Classic on the Gold Coast, Karuta Queen led and was found wanting at the finish with You’re Canny proving too strong on the line to win by a length and a half.

A modest $40,000 purchase for his trainer from the Guntawang Stud draft at the 2010 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, You’re Canny has won three of four starts and close to $200,000 in prizemoney, his three wins all at his home track of Canberra with the lone defeat in the $250,000 Inglis Classic race behind Pane in the Glass.

You’re Canny is one of three winners, but the first stakes-winner from former good class mare Techniques, a winner of five races highlighted by the Group III Newcastle Newmarket.

A daughter of Palace Music (USA), Techniques was sold as part of the Risdon Dispersal in 2008 for $90,000 to Peter Wynn Bloodstock and was in foal to Canny Lad with You’re Canny the result of that mating.

She has no yearling for the sales this year, but did have a colt by Lonhro last spring and was covered again by the same sire.

You’re Canny is the 49th stakes-winner for Golden Slipper winner Canny Lad, who turns 24 later this year and covered 43 mares last spring at a fee of $16,500.
