Redoute’s Choice Colt Triumphs in Dubai

Breednet - Tara Madgwick - Friday, 19 February 2010

Australian bred Redoute’s Choice colt Musir has made it back-to-back wins at Meydan in Dubai after scoring a commanding victory in the Group Three UAE 2000 Guineas overnight.

Sent out a hot favourite, the Mike de Kock trained colt relished the step up to 1600 metres forging clear of the Godolphin entry Frozen Power, the same horse he beat in the Guineas Trial two weeks ago.

He was eased back to the rear of the field from his outside gate by Christophe Soumillon before charging home with a devastating burst.

Musir (picture courtesy Dubai Racing Club) scored officially by three and a quarter lengths under 59.5 kg with the second Australian bred Redoute’s Choice colt Solid Choice again finishing fourth.

Mike de Kock confirmed that his star colt will now aim towards the UAE Derby.

“He has been showing us that he’s a bit special and on that performance the longer trip of the Derby will not be a problem,” deKock told UK Racing Post.

“I told Chris [Christophe Soumillon] to see what we had tonight and it was good performance.”

A homebred for Sheikh Bin Khalifa Al Maktoum, Musir was the Champion Two Year Old in South Africa last year and now has the overall record of four wins and a second from five starts.

Bred in Australia by the Sheikh, he was offered at the 2008 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale by Coolmore as agent passing in shy of his $1million reserve and subsequently sent to South Africa.

Musir is the first foal of stakes-placed Encosta de Lago mare Dizzy de Lago, who has had just the one foal since he was born, a yearling colt by Elusive Quality (USA) and she was covered last spring by Coolmore’s five-time Group One winner Duke of Marmalade (IRE).

Pedigree wise Musir should be able to handle a longer journey as his next two dams are by Mill Reef and Green Dancer with Japanese Derby winner King Kamehameha featuring in his family.

Musir is an important horse for the Australian breeding industry as he is a global ambassador for us that happens to represent our two champion sires Redoute’s Choice and Encosta de Lago.

The same cross is carried by boom two year-old colt Beneteau, who will start favourite in the Group One MRC Blue Diamond Stakes at Caulfield on Saturday.
