Redzel surges to maiden Group 1 win

Redzel gave super stallion Snitzel his fifth individual Group 1 winner of 2017 and 11th career Group 1 winner when he claimed today’s Doomben 10,000.

Redzel (Snitzel x Millrich) led from start to finish, defying all challengers on his way to a maiden Group 1 win.

He beat Counterattack and Easter graduates Derryn (third) and Russian Revolution (fourth).

Redzel is a graduate of the 2013 Inglis Australian Bloodstock-Select Weanlings Sale, where he was sold by PPB Advisory as Receivers and Managers of his breeder, Lee Fleming Thoroughbreds.

Marquee Stud purchased him for $45,000 and today’s victory took his career earnings to $1,194,450.

Winning trainer Peter Snowden praised the horse’s gutsy front-running performance.

“Full credit to the horse; he’s come a long way, and to see him win a race like this it’s just deserved,’’ Snowden said.

“He’s an honest, very genuine horse, and he deserves every bit of it.’’

In what was a big day of Stakes race successes for Inglis graduates Australia-wide:

Stampede (High Chaparral x Nothin’ Leica Cat) backed up his Wagga Cup victory of last week when he claimed the Group 3 Chairman’s Hcp (2000m) at Doomben.

The 4YO is developing into a very talented stayer, with today’s win his fifth from just nine starts.

Gai Waterhouse and James Harron bought Stampede at the 2014 Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $80,000 from Coolmore Stud’s draft.

Snitzel colt Tangled will be given his chance for Group 1 glory next month after he blew his rivals away in the Group 2 Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben.

2YO Tangled (Snitzel x Bramble Rose) is “a really nice colt who we know will run a lot further’’, according to his trainer Chris Waller.

The Group 1 JJ Atkins Stakes (1600m) will be the colt’s winter target, at Eagle Farm on June 10.

Tangled was a $310,000 purchase for Waller from Newgate Farm’s draft at last year’s Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

3YO fillies Gibraltar Girl and Vienna Miss both added black type to their resumes when winning the Listed Denise’s Joy Stakes (1100m) at Scone and Listed Adelaide Guineas at Morphettville respectively.

Gibraltar Girl (Manhattan Rain x Gibraltar Campion) is trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott who, with Julian Blaxland paid $360,000 for her from Arrowfield Stud’s draft at the 2015 Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Vienna Miss (Snitzel x Miss Doopsy) held off the fast-finishing Inglis Easter graduate Petition to claim her second career victory.

Vienna Miss was a $100,000 buy for John Hyam Racing at the 2015 Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from Eliza Park International.
