Spoilt for Choice at Great Southern Sale

Sacred Choice’s Group 1 Doncaster Mile win last Saturday was the latest reminder of what the Inglis Great Southern Sale has to offer for shrewd buyers.

Now a dual Group 1 winner (having conquered Typhoon Tracy and Hot Danish in Flemington’s Myer Classic last year), Sacred Choice’s dam Sacred Habit was plucked out of the 2009 Great Southern Sale for a mere $2000.

The Great Southern Sale has quickly garnered a reputation for being a source of quality bloodstock at value prices and the catalogue for the 2011 renewal is now online.

Other examples of bargain broodmare purchases include the dam of Horse of the Year Scenic Blast for $12,000 and Group 1 placed multiple stakes winner Carrara for $65,000.

The 2011 sale will be held at Oaklands over four days.

The Great Southern Weanling Sale will be held on May 17 and 18 with 385 weanlings catalogued.

The Great Southern Bloodstock Sale will be staged on May 19 and 20. This section of the sale includes 300 broodmares, followed by 100 mixed stock, comprising stallions, yearlings, racehorses and unbroken stock.

The stallions include Group 1 winners Clangalang and Delago Brom.

In addition to the highlight broodmare graduates, the weanling section of the sale is also carving out a lofty reputation.

Star graduates include summer discovery Warm Love, who graduated to Listed grade before notching a Group 1 placing behind Black Caviar in the Lightning Stakes. The daughter of Octagonal cost just $9000.

Group 1 Thousand Guineas and AJC Sires Produce winner Yosei was secured for $15,000, while Group 3 winner That’s Not It was passed in at $25,000.

A highlight of weanling sales each year is the appearance of progeny by new sires and this year’s Group is headed by the Golden Slipper winner Sebring, fellow Group 1 winner Northern Meteor, Blue Diamond hero Reaan and the impeccably-bred Sharkbite. High profile shuttlers with first season progeny include Duke Of Marmalade, Henrythenavigator, Astronomer Royal and Street Boss.

Proven sires represented among the 385 strong catalogue include Bel Esprit, Choisir, Churchill Downs, Commands, Domesday, Encosta de Lago, Fastnet Rock, Haradasun, Hard Spun, High Chaparral, Lonhro, Magnus, Not A Single Doubt, Pins, Purrealist, Snitzel, Statue Of Liberty, Street Cry and Testa Rossa.
