Able Friend Conquers Hong Kong Classic Mile

Powerful Australian bred and Inglis sold galloper Able Friend turned on the afterburners at Sha Tin on Sunday evening, steaming away with the Group 1 Hong Kong Classic Mile in race record time.

Able Friend (Shamardal x Ponte Piccolo) was sent out the odds on favourite for the four-year-old feature and he duly saluted in emphatic style under Joao ‘Magic’ Moreira.

The John Moore trained star stopped the clock in a Classic Mile record time of 1:33.43 for the 1600m contest, netting his owners the lion’s share of the HK$6,000,000 race prizemoney.

Bred by Stuart Ramsey, Able Friend was purchased by George Moore Bloodstock for $550,000 from Ramsey’s Turangga Farm draft at the 2011 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Able Friend’s yearling half-brother by Manhattan Rain will be offered by Turangga Farm at the 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney in April.

Able Friend is the most expensive son of Shamardal to be sold in Australia and he is living right up to his pricetag. Sunday’s win was Able Friend’s fourth win from five starts in Hong Kong.
