Anise Proves Her Worth In Kindergarten Stakes

Racing And Sports - Rob Burnet - Saturday, 9 April 2011

Anise may have disappointed trainer Peter Snowden earlier in her brief career, but made up for that with a win in the $125,000 Group 3 Kindergarten Stakes (1100m) at the Australian Turf Club's 150th AJC Australian Derby meeting at Randwick on Saturday.

Anise had opened her account with a win at Rosehill over 1100m on November 20th and she was second in her next race following a short spell over 1100m at Warwick Farm on March 5th, followed by a fourth in the Group 2 Reisling Stakes over 1200m at Rosehill on March 19th.

On Saturday Anise made life a little more difficult than it could have been by being slow away while Fox and Josh Parr led the charge to the turn into the straight. Meanwhile Anise and Kerrin McEvoy were back and forced wide on the turn.

Fox capitulated shortly after the 300m and then Queenian and Anise arrived on the outside to take over. These two settled down to a battle to the line with Anise having the upper hand by a nose in the photo finish.

Hot Snitzel were third, the margin 1 1/4L. Fox was fourth. The time was 1.04.61 on the Dead (5) track, with the final 600m in 35.74. Anise paid $5.10 on NSW TAB.

“It was not the game plan as she was slow into stride but I do not think Kerrin could do much about it and she seemed to take forever to get going,” said Snowden.

“She was seven deep on the corner and the way she strode up at the top of the rise I thought she is going to be in it. She took awhile to get there but she did and that is the main thing.

“I think she is still very immature as well. I had it in my mind that she is pure speed filly but it is certainly good to see her come from behind. She will probably go out now but that is something to think about for later.

“It is fair to say that she has been disappointing in my mind and I thought she would win at Warwick Farm when she got beat, and the run at Rosehill was only okay, so it is very pleasing to see her win today,” he said.

McEvoy was also complimentary of the filly's effort commenting he felt from the top of the rise with 300m to run that she was going to win.

Anise, out of the Flying Spur mare Pimpinella, was purchased at the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale for $600,000 out of the draft of Willow Park, as an agent. She has now won two starts with an additional placing and with her valuable black type win today has now earned stakes of $145,000.
