Country cheapie beats the city slickers

Bargain purchase Ideal Position posted his fourth win in five starts when the Mudgee galloper upstaged his city rivals in Saturday’s Accountability Recruitment Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill.

Ideal Position strung together three wins this preparation before an unlucky fourth behind Riva De Lago at Scone last start over 1300 metres.

"I was just so happy to see this race on today over the 1400 metres. After his run at Scone we were trying to find the right race for him and this one came up,” winning trainer Jeff Brasch said.

"We thought that would suit him perfectly.”

The trainer paid tribute to Ideal Position’s tenacity. Saturday’s win was the galloper’s eighth from 15 starts and took his prizemoney to more than $110,000 after Brasch purchased him as an unraced tried horse at the 2011 Inglis Sydney Autumn Thoroughbred Sale.

"We paid $1100 for him 12 months ago,” he said.

"He tries hard all the time. He’s never let us down. I think we might have a few quiet drinks tonight.”

Ridden by top bush jockey Greg Ryan, the Snippetson gelding settled off the pace set by the heavily backed Green Beret.

Green Beret skipped clear upon straightening but Ryan snuck along the rails before switching out to claim the lead inside the final 100 metres.

Ideal Position defeated Green Beret with Dunrossil finishing third. The luckless runner of the race was Al’s Gold, who struggled to find clear room or most of the straight but hit the line gamely late to finish fourth.

Ideal Position (4g Snippetson-Ideal Option) was purchased by Brasch for $1,100 at the 2011 Inglis Sydney Autumn Thoroughbred Sale.
