Easter Babies Shine at Rosehill

Valuable Easter purchases Anise and Foxwedge made impressive winning debuts at Rosehill today, indicating bigger assignments await later in the season.

ANISE ($600,000 2010 Easter, 2f General Nediym-Pimpinella) dented the boom on Snitzel filly Saramenha when making a most impressive debut for Darley.

Saramenha had won her previous two outings by big spaces, but she had no answer for Anise, who powered away under Kerrin McEvoy.

“She’s always shown very nice ability but is still very new. She’s a real quality filly that showed a lot of good things there today,” trainer Peter Snowden said.

Anise is now likely to be spelled, with Snowden declaring she’s certain to return a superior filly next preparation.

Offered for sale by Willow Park, she is the most expensive yearling ever by Widden’s ill-fated dual Group 1 winner General Nediym.

Anise is the first foal to race from Flying Spur mare Pimpinella, a daughter of the wonderful producer Twiglet.

Pimpinella’s siblings include the Hong Kong Champion Fairy King Prawn and Group 1 Salinger Stakes winner Easy Rocking.

With punters reeling following Saramenha’s defeat, it was left to boom colt FOXWEDGE ($925,000 2010 Easter, 2c Fastnet Rock-Forest Native) to steady the ship.

An eight length trial winner earlier this month, Foxwedge was sent out a $1.30 chance and justified the short quote with his convincing win.

John O’Shea teamed with De Burgh Equine’s James Harron to purchase Foxwedge out of the Luskin Park draft at this year’s Easter sale.

“We decided he was the horse we most wanted out of the sale and we approached Dr Bateman to buy him and fortunately he was kind enough to do so,” O’Shea said.

Like Snowden, O’Shea will send his youngster for a spell and declared he would be a superior horse in the autumn.

Winning rider Corey Brown said Foxwedge was very green, but summed up “he’s pretty good, no doubt about that.”
