Foxwedge Colt Tops Opening Day Of Great Southern Sale

22nd Jun 2014

A weanling colt from the first crop of Fastnet Rock’s Group 1 winning son Foxwedge topped the opening day of the Inglis Melbourne Great Southern Sale on Sunday when selling for $175,000.

Attractive colts and fillies from a wide range of proven and exciting young sires were well received by a competitive buying bench throughout the day.

A strong clearance rate of 85% saw 149 weanlings sell at an average price of $14,884 – a 33% increase on Day 1 in 2013 and a massive 61% higher than 2012.

“We are seeing a very strong market for weanlings. There was good competition from both the domestic and New Zealand buyers in attendance, particularly on the better quality types,” said Peter Heagney, Inglis Director.

A long term client of Inglis’ from Queensland purchased the top priced weanling on the day (Lot 63), a colt by Foxwedge from Ekleel, for $175,000 from the draft of Donnybrook Estates. They also secured the top priced filly for $78,000 - a weanling by first season sire Helmet from Lindy Lets Go that was sold by Supreme Thoroughbreds as Lot 127.

Other first season sires represented with weanlings at the Great Southern Sale include Moshe (sold up to $54,000), Toorak Toff (to $50,000), Master Of Design (to $35,000) and Skilled (to $26,000).

Ascot Farm NZ have had plenty of success pinhooking from the Oaklands ring in past years and they were back again today snapping up colts by proven sires Sebring (Lot 115) and Stratum (Lot 54) for $90,000 and $70,000 respectively.

Weanlings that passed-in on Sunday are available for private sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.

Lots 191 to 268 and supplementary weanling lots 589 to 599 will be auctioned from the earlier starting time of 10:00am tomorrow, Monday 23 June.

Following the supplementary weanlings on Day Two will be the Broodmare Lots 269 to 418.

The third and final day of the Great Southern Sale on Tuesday 23 June will also start at 10:00am, with the remaining broodmares, stallions, yearlings, unbroken and racing stock to be offered.
