Girl In Flight a budding "star"

Ryan Maloney declared unbeaten filly Girl In Flight a “star” as Robbie Griffiths unveiled Australasian Oaks ambitions following her win in today’s Leigh Thomas Gift at Caulfield.

Maloney said Girl In Flight possessed untapped ability who would only get better next preparation.

Girl In Flight sat a couple of length behind the second last horse, but Maloney bided his time, took her through the field and this daughter of Commands quickly put away her rivals.

Backed from $2.50 to $2.30 favorite, Girl In Flight scored by a half length from Collins Street, $10, with one length to Cottonwood Grove, $4.80, third.

“From the time I rode her when she won her first start at Pakenham, I thought she was pretty special,” Maloney said.

“After she won at Sale I thought she was a potential star and after today I think I’m pretty right.

“She has an amazing turn of foot for such a light and small filly. Every start she’s had, she’s improved.

“She is still months away from reaching her potential, which is the real scary part. Her potential is really untapped.”

Griffiths believes Girl In Flight is a “black type filly” with the Adelaide carnival in May foremost in his mind.

He said the filly was a late foal and had kicked off her career behind the spring carnival and it would expecting too much to aim at the autumn.

“Adelaide and Brisbane (carnivals) are more suited to her maturity. I’ve always thought that if she lived up to own opinion she could be an Australasian Oaks filly,” Griffiths said.

Girl In Flight (Commands x Rossiya (FR)) was a $60,000 purchase by Griffiths Racing from the Swettenham Stud draft at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale
