Great Southern Sale Closes on Record High

28th Jun 2007

The William Inglis & Son Great Southern Sale came to a close today with very strong competition for the racehorses, yearlings and unbroken stock on offer. An extremely pleasing clearance rate of 92% today was indicative of the high demand for the quality lots offer. A record overall sale gross of $11,915,000 was recorded.

Equal topping today's session was Magical Tricks (Lot 998), a Favorite Trick (USA) half-sister to this season's Group One Blue Diamond placegetter Shrewd Rhythm, himself a graduate of the 2006 Premier Yearling Sale. Purchased for $120,000 by Paringa Park, the buyer of yesterday's top price lot, the three time winning mare is also a half-sister to Group Two winner Blur.

Jennifer Ann (Lot 1050), the last race filly offered in the main catalogue, was knocked down to Victoria's Glentree Downs Pastoral also for $120,000. Offered on behalf of Lindsay Park Stud as agent, the lightly raced Flying Spur filly is already stakes placed from just five career starts.

The entire sale was an overwhelming success with vendors meeting the market with quality lots which were snapped up by buyers including major studs from Queensland, Victoria, New South Wales, Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia, while international buyers from the Philippines were participants.

Buyers purchased with confidence, signing on almost twice as many lots for over $100,000 this year than compared to last year. An extremely pleasing fact to note in the weanling section was that six weanlings were sold for $100,000 and over, compared to only one lot last year.

Peter Heagney, William Inglis & Son Director, felt that, “The Great Southern Sale scaled new heights this year, firmly establishing its position within the Australia Bloodstock Calendar.”

“The weanling section of the sale signified the strength of the current market place, while the thoroughbred section of the sale, highlighted by 11 lots selling for over $100,000, was indicative of the quality supplied by vendors,” added Heagney.

The 2007 William Inglis & Son Winter Weanling, Yearling & Thoroughbred Sale held at Newmarket, Sydney on Friday July 13 is the next opportunity for buyers to purchase bloodstock. Commencing at 10:30am, catalogues are now available online or by contacting the Newmarket office on 02 9399 7999.
