Gust storms away with Gold Carat

Racing Network - Adrian Dunn - Saturday, 4 January 2013

Emerging colt Trust In A Gust underscored his ability with a narrow, but impressive win in today’s VOBIS Gold Carat at Caulfield.

The Darren Weir-trained colt made it five wins from eight starts with his latest success in the $150,000 race.

Weir said he put Trust In A Gust in the paddock after the spring, but the horse was doing so well that he searched through the calendar to see what was available for the colt.

“I saw this race (the VOBIS Gold Carat) and thought it was a great prizemoney race so I freshened him up,” Weir said.

“I was going to send him to the beach, but he’s not the easiest horse to handle so we kept him at Ballarat. It has been a great reward for a good bunch of owners.”

Weir said Trust In A Gust would now head to the $150,000 VOBIS Gold Star (1500 m) at Moonee Valley on Friday, January 24.

Damien Oliver parked Trust In A Gust behind the heavily supported Wild Fire, which sped straight to the front.

Oliver angled Trust In A Gust to the outside once the field straightened and the colt surged to the front then defied all challengers.

The ride fell Oliver’s way when regular rider Brad Rawiller was suspended at Ararat last week.

Trust In A Gust, which drifted from $2.40 to $3 before firming to start $2.90 favorite, scored by half a length from Churchill Dancer, $18, with one and a quarter lengths to This Is The Show, $71, third.

Written Up, backed from $26 to $5, raced outside the leader, but faded to finish fifth while Wild Fire, backed from as much as $6 early in the week to $3.40, compounded to finish seventh.

Trust In A Gust (Keep The Faith x Subtle Breeze) was a $45,000 purchase by trainer Darren Weir from draft of Swettenham Stud at the 2012 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale
