Newmarket Abuzz In The Countdown To Easter

Sydney turned on one of its finest days of the year as buyers busily went about inspections at Newmarket ahead of this week’s Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, April 5-7.

“There’s a good vibe about the complex and plenty of interest from local and international buyers ahead of the sale,” said Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster.

“There a few new faces as well, which is encouraging to see.

“It’s nice to see many connections that had runners in yesterday’s Golden Slipper here today inspecting including Dr Ed Bateman whose two purchases last year Satin Shoes and Foxwedge made it into the field yesterday and are already worth considerably more than their purchase price.”

Saturday’s Golden Slipper meeting at Rosehill Gardens once again shaped the fortunes for breeders ahead of the southern hemisphere’s flagship sale.

While some were left pondering the misfortunes of Fastnet Rock, with two of his five Golden Slipper runners withdrawn at the barrier, More Than Ready surged to outright second on the General Sires list with his progeny collecting almost a million dollars in stakes yesterday.

At Rosehill Gardens, More Joyous collected another Group One victory in the G1 Inglis Queen Of The Turf Stakes, while in the West, smart filly Dreamaway defeated the colts in the Group One WATC Derby.

More Than Ready’s Golden Slipper third placegetter Elite Falls added further value to her Haradasun sister to be sold by Stuart Ramsay’s Turangga Farm as lot 373 on Wednesday afternoon.

More Than Ready will be represented by 27 yearlings at this week’s sale including lot 115 on account of Vinery Stud and lot 209 from Milburn Creek Thoroughbreds that are bred on the same cross as Dreamaway and Elite Falls, being out of Danehill mares.

Danehill completed a Golden Slipper trifecta as a grand sire yesterday with the victorious Sepoy and Elite Falls being from daughters, while runner up Mosheen is by his son Fastnet Rock.

There are 25 yearlings out of Danehill mares catalogued in this year’s Easter Sale including eleven by Encosta de Lago, a cross which has produced twenty percent stakes performers to runners including recent Group One winner Aloha, champion 2yo Merlene de Lago and this season’s unbeaten 2yo filly One Last Dance.
