Makybe colt stars on final day of Easter Yearling Sale

The curtain came down on the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale in Sydney today, with Makybe Diva’s half-brother the highlight when sold to champion trainer Peter Moody for $1.2million.
Makybe Diva won the race that stops the nation, the Melbourne Cup three-times and her yearling half-brother made all onlookers at Inglis stop and take notice when he strode into the Newmarket ring as Lot 445.
By Street Cry from Tugela, the colt (pictured) was offered by Tony Santic’s Makybe stud and was eventually knocked down to Moody after a battle with Gai Waterhouse.
71 yearlings were offered from Session One today, with 87% selling at an average price of $229,679.
A total of $72,825,000 has been traded on the 330 yearlings sold from Session One of the 96th annual Australian Easter Yearling Sale, with a clearance rate of 83%, up 2 per cent on the corresponding figure recorded twelve months ago.
“Today’s top three lots, all colts, were sold to the leading trainers and owners in Victoria, Japan and Hong Kong, a fantastic endorsement of the world class product offered at Easter,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said.
“The Session One average kept rising the further we got into the sale as buyers found their feet in the current market and it is great to see the Day one clearance rate rise from 74% at 6pm on Tuesday evening to now 82%.
Session Two sees rises in gross and average
88 yearlings were sold in Session Two this afternoon at a clearance rate of 83%, adding an additional $6,481,000 to the sale gross, which now stands at $79,306,000.
The session has a proven track record of unearthing top class gallopers and buyers rewarded vendors for bringing well-presented lots purchasing 20 for $100,000 or more.
A new record price for an Easter Session Two yearling was recorded when Lot 463, Edinglassie Stud’s More Than Ready-Faith Hill filly, was purchased by John O’Shea for $360,000.
“Group One winning two-year-olds and champion three-year-olds continue to be purchased from across all buying levels at Easter and on behalf of the whole Inglis team I wish this year’s purchasers the best of luck in the future with their new stable additions,” Webster said.
