Polanski Wins Fairy-tale Derby

Inglis Yearling Sale purchase Polanski made dreams come true at Flemington on Saturday, scoring a fairy-tale win in the $1.5 million Group 1 VRC Victoria Derby over 2500m.

Polanski ($4,000 2012 Autumn, 3c Rakti-Citrium) was tuned to the minute by trainer Robbie Laing and after settling midfield the tough three-year-old hit the front early in the home straight before proving too strong for his rivals running away to an emphatic three length victory. Complacent and Thunder Fantasy filled the placings.

The win was jockey Hugh Bowman’s third success in the last four runnings of the 2500m time-honoured classic, having claimed the Spring Carnival feature on Lion Tamer in 2011 and on Inglis Yearling Sale graduate Fiveandahalfstar last year.

"Of the three Derby winners this guy is the strongest," Bowman declared.

Trainer Robbie Laing predicts even bigger things to come from Polanski, a horse he snapped up for just $4,000 at 2012 Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale from breeder Chatswood Stud.

"I honestly believe when he thickens up he'll become a star of the turf," Laing said. “He's the real deal, a tough, strong, genuine stayer who should only get better as he gets older."

Laing races the $1.17 million earner in partnership with Ross & Mrs F Warner, Jack & Jo Fraser, Henny & Ken Coram, Blair Shaw and Andy Hall.

“He'll go for a break now and we'll come back and go for the Australian Guineas then head to Sydney,” added Laing.

Spring 2014 targets would likely include either or both of the Caulfield Cup and W.S. Cox Plate, races won by fellow Inglis Select Yearling Sale graduates Fawkner and Shamus Award in the past few weeks.

More quality catalogues are currently being compiled for next year’s Inglis Select Yearling Sale Series by Inglis’ experienced and trusted bloodstock team.

Confirmed entries include a sister (by Northern Meteor) to boom three-year-old sprinter Zoustar, which won the Group 1 VRC Coolmore Stud Stakes today. The yearling filly will be offered from the draft of Attunga Stud at the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale on 8, 9 & 10 April 2014.
