Sertorius Claims Zipping Classic Day Feature

Sertorius became the latest Inglis Select Yearling Sale graduate to claim a day’s feature event during the Melbourne Spring Carnival when running away with the Gr.2 MRC Zipping Classic over 2400m at Caulfield on Saturday.

The improving galloper’s victory in the $350,000 feature on Zipping Classic Day follows the major wins of fellow Inglis graduates Fawkner (Caulfield Cup), Shamus Award (Cox Plate) and Polanski (Victoria Derby) in the past few weeks.

Sertorius ($100,000 2009 Premier, 6g Galileo-Pretty Penny) was one of the few winners to come from off the pace at Caulfield on Saturday, storming home along the fence to a two length win in the mile and a half classic.

"You will not get a better ride than that - that was a ripper of a ride," said co-trainer Jamie Edwards.

The Zipping (Sandown) Classic is named in honour of Inglis graduate Zipping which won the race in four consecutive years from 2007 to 2010. Last year’s renewal was won by Inglis graduate Tanby, giving Inglis sold horses six out of the last seven runnings of the event.

Edwards trains Sertorius in partnership with Bruce Elkington. Together they had purchased Sertorius for $100,000 from the draft of Glentree Downs at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Sertorius’ Group 2 win today took his racetrack earnings past $800,000. The six-year-old has won nine times and placed on another 10 occasions from 25 starts. Sights are now firmly on the rich Sydney Autumn Carnival.

“He really deserves to be put away now and we’ll raise our sights with him a fair bit in the autumn,” Edwards added.
