Southern Exposure - Mare Strength the Key to Southern Success

14th Jun 2007

As the 2007 William Inglis & Son Great Southern Sale is the one of the last opportunity buyers have to purchase quality bloodstock for the season, the lucrative section of over 400 well-bred mares in foal to leading commercial stallions, are sure to be highly sought after.

Large drafts from many well respected Victorian farms sees over 20 vendors having drafts in excess of five or more mares, while a quick glance through the stallions that many of theses mares are in foal to notes that close to half of the stallions in the top 20 on the General Sires table are represented.

Eliza Park have supported the Great Southern Sale extremely well this year, not only preparing in excess of 50 mares for an unreserved reduction sale, but also offering close to that again in the weanling section.

Shane McGrath, Eliza Park’s General Manager explains that, “We feel that the Great Southern Sale has positioned itself as the pre-eminent, mixed bloodstock auction in the southern states and warrants the support of Victorian farms, plus it is a wonderful opportunity for Eliza Park to ‘showcase’ its weanling talent and disperse some outstanding breeding stock.”

Eliza Park, in conjunction with Sirecam is running a raffle where the major prize is a nomination to their recently acquired stallion prospect Written Tycoon. For further information regarding the raffle, please contact Eliza Park Stud or visit their marquee at Oaklands during the sale.

Highlights of the draft include Lot 554, the Group Two winning Moralee (NZ) in foal to Elusive Quality (USA), Lot 546 the dual stakes producing Hurry Up Dear in foal to Bel Esprit and Lot 560, and the stakes placed Soak Up The Sun (Lot 560), whose half-sister, Desert Heiress recorded a 1.3 length victory at Moonee Valley on Monday. In foal to multiple Group One winner Elvstroem, Soak Up The Sun also comes from the family of Monday’s Group Two Brisbane Cup placegetter Lilakyn. Mares in foal to stallions such as More Than Ready (USA), God’s Own, Starcraft (NZ), Invincible Spirit (IRE) and Delago Brom also form part of the reduction draft.

Another farm to place their faith in the Great Southern Sale is Trevor Gluck’s Tremon Thoroughbreds who will offer three extremely well credentialed mares. Potential sale topper, the dual Listed winning Flying Spur mare Creative Plan will enter the ring as Lot 744 early on June 28. In foal to Encosta de Lago, the sire of Saturday’s Group One TJ Smith Stakes winner Apercu, Creative Plan’s dam and grand-dam are both stakes winners. A significant update to the pedigree appears in the second dam, where Bantry Bay, a grand-daughter of Style A Grace recorded a stylish victory in the Group Three SAJC Sires’ Produce Stakes. On top of that, Creative Plan is a three-quarter sister to Hong Kong Group One winner Jeune King Prawn, therefore she is sure to be high on most stud masters ‘must see’ list.

Chicago Wonder, Lot 727, a Bluebird (USA) half sister to Creative Plan will be offered in foal to Danehill Dancer (IRE), while her 2006 Flying Spur weanling colt will be offered as Lot 232 on Monday June 25.

The final mare from Tremon Thoroughbreds sees Lot 621, the stakes placed That Kind Of Girl, a full sister to the Tremon Thoroughbreds bred Group Three winner Spying. Her Encosta de Lago weanling colt will also go through the ring as Lot 137, on the first day of the sale.

Furthermore, other appealing mares include Lot 698, a Flying Spur half sister to multiple Group One winner Laisserfaire, as well as the stakes winners Foreplay and Personify. Offered by Beauvest Pty Ltd, the mare is in foal to Quest For Fame (GB) in her first season at stud.

A recent significant update appears in the pedigree of Lot 754, the six time winning Anabaa (USA) mare Dash On Ruby. In foal to sprint sensation General Nediym, the family has been bolstered by the recent Group One victory of Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) colt Seventh Rock in South Africa.

With a broad range of mares on offer, there is universal appeal at every level of every budget. The sale commences on Sunday June 24 with two days of weanlings. Recommencing on June 27 after a days break, with three days of broodmares, stallions, yearlings, unbroken stock and racehorses.
