Speedy stakes winning trio are bound for higher spring glory

Inglis graduates Bound For Earth, Speediness and Shoreham all scored at stakes level in Australia on Saturday, with their respective trainers harbouring Group 1 aims this Spring for the trio.

Bound For Earth ($290,000 2012 Easter, 3f Northern Meteor-Bulla Borghese) was successful in the second leg of Sydney’s Princess Series, defeating dual Group 1 winner Guelph in a nail-biting finish to the Group 2 ATC Furious Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick.

"We've always had a nice opinion of her. I think when she gets to a mile she will be at her best," said trainer John O'Shea.

O’Shea will aim Bound For Earth at the third and fourth legs of the Princess Series; Group 2 ATC Tea Rose Stakes (1400m) in two weeks and Group 1 ATC Flight Stakes (1600m) a fortnight later.

"It will be interesting to see her and Guelph, they are going to have some good tussles over the next month,” O’Shea predicted.

Bred by Reg Kemister, Bound For Earth is by Northern Meteor from Group 1 VRC Oaks winner Bulla Borghese. The filly was purchased by Segenhoe Thoroughbreds for $290,000 from the draft of Broadwater Thoroughbreds at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.

Bound For Earth has just had the four starts for two wins and one placing. Time will tell if she can measure up to Group 1 level like recent Furious Stakes winners Dear Demi, Streama, Melito and fellow Easter graduate Samantha Miss.

Speediness ($18,000 2009 Premier, 6g Testa Rossa-Fine Glass) took his earnings to $570,000 with victory in the Group 3 VRC Bobbie Lewis Stakes (1200m) at Flemington today.

Colin Scott has travelled Speediness to Scone for successful carnivals the two last years, but the Caulfield based trainer has bigger aims ahead, declaring the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes, Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 2 Waterford Crystal Mile the main goal for the galloper this spring.

“I didn't give him a lot of time off after Scone (winning the Scone Cup) and his work had been so good, exceptional really. He deserves his crack at the big races, so we'll now go to the Sir Rupert Clarke then the Toorak,” Scott said.

Speediness (pictured) was bred by Mrs DM Anceschi and sold for $18,000 to part-owner Edward Thomas at the 2009 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale from the draft of Bombora Downs.

Thomas races the six-year-old gelding with Colin Scott, G D Lynn, D L Thomas & Miss J A Stevens. Speediness has had 22 starts for seven wins and six placings, amassing $572,122 in prizemoney.

Shoreham ($45,000 2011 Premier, 4g Reset-Teneales Pearl) produced an exciting first-up effort to defeat a strong field in the Listed VRC Sofitel Stakes (1400m) at Flemington earlier in the day.

Saturday was Shoreham’s first start since placing in the 2500m Group 1 SAJC South Australian Derby in May behind fellow Inglis graduate Escado.

Immediately after today’s victory trainer Saab Hassan declared his aim of qualifying the up-and-comer for the big Cups.

“His aim is the Caulfield and Melbourne Cup and I’ve got a plan (to get there). Don’t underestimate this horse because he’s a little better than what people think,” said Hasan.

Shoreham was bred by J A & J M Anderson Pty Ltd in Victoria and offered from the draft of Little Plains Stud at the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, where he was picked up by James Bester Bloodstock for $45,000.

The son of Reset has earned over $300,000 during his 12 start racing career which has included three wins and four placings. Shoreham is raced by T W Minett, G Minett, Ms L Minett, Mrs K Minett and Ms S Minett.

On Friday Impetuous ($600,000 2011 Easter, 4m Fastnet Rock-Rash Promise) became the eighth Inglis stakes winner in Australia this season when she won the Listed Wyong RC Mona Lisa Stakes.
