Starspangledbanner Puts In Gold Performance First Up

Racing And Sports - Saturday, 1 August 2009

Starspangledbanner, who belongs to the same family as Elvstroem and Haradasun, has won first up today at Caulfield in the $70,000 Victorian Owners And Breeders Awards Handicap (1000m).

A $120,000 purchase at the 2007 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale, Starspangledbanner is a half to speedy filly Gold Chant who has won five races and is placed in Listed company.

The Troy Corstens-trained colt is out of Gold Anthem and his Grand Dam, National Song, is a half sister to proven broodmare Circles Of Gold.

Circles Of Gold is best known as the dam of stallions and Group 1 winners Elvstroem and 2007 Group 1 Doncaster Handicap winner Haradasun.

Starspangledbanner has shown plenty of promise in his short career to date.

The colt raced as an early two-year-old winning the $250,000 Inglis Juvenile at Moonee Valley on debut in October 2008.

The son of Choisir was placed in Stakes company on two occasions during the autumn and after today's win, will likely look for more stakes success over the spring carnival.

“He is an awesome looking horse and he always has been,” trainer Troy Corstens said.

“I was really pleased with the way he settled and finished off. We always thought he was just going to be a 1000m horse, but there may be a couple of more things to this horse.”

“We'll take every race as it comes. We'll step him up to the 1100m next time and then to the 1200m. If he handles both of those well then he'll run in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.”
