Top Price up at Competitive Autumn Opener

A Written Tycoon filly starred on the opening day of the 2011 Inglis Melbourne Autumn Yearling Sale at Oaklands today in a pleasing session where figures were comparable to last year.

In all, 156 horses sold at a gross of $1,822,000 today. The average price of $11,679 was only slightly down on the $12,228 overall figure recorded 12 months ago.

A strong clearance rate of 81% underlined the competitive nature of today’s session.

“This has been a very strong day of selling,” Inglis Director Peter Heagney said.

“There was excellent competition on most horses and the clearance rate is indicative of vendors being satisfied with what buyers were prepared to pay.

“But most notably, we had a lot of new buyers here today that we haven’t seen participate previously at Oaklands, which is a tremendous result for everybody.”

The day’s highest priced lot, from the Bluebird mare Turtle Dove, was prepared for sale by Eliza Park and fetched $80,000 – well up on last year’s top price of $65,000.

The Written Tycoon filly was purchased by EBA Victoria and is a half-sister to five winners, including Queensland Derby runner-up Lords A Leaping, from the family of New Zealand Derby winner Coniston Bluebird.

Makybe’s Nadeem colt from Thor’s Daughter was the second highest priced lot of the day, bringing $62,000 to the bid of Matthew Williams.

Colts by Churchill Downs (sold by Toolora Lodge to Griffiths Training) and Hidden Dragon (sold by Swettenham Stud and knocked down to Inglis as Agent) also reached the $50,000 mark today.

Horses passed in during today’s session are still available for sale via the Make an Offer Service.

The sale continues tomorrow, with another 249 yearlings catalogued with selling beginning at 11am.

Inglis Sale Day Live and Online bidding are again available for those unable to attend.
