Whobe Headlines Bargain Inglis Buys

Classic graduates Whobegotyou and Becerra took centre stage in Melbourne and Adelaide before Avienus completed a trio of bargain priced stakes wins for Inglis yearlings today.

The three gallopers could have all been purchased for a combined total of $100,000 out of the sales ring.

WHOBEGOTYOU ($19,500 2007 Classic, 5g Street Cry-Temple Of Peace) enhanced his wonderful Moonee Valley record and took his earnings beyond $2.6million when completing back-to-back wins in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes.

The Mark Kavanagh trained gelding has won five of his six appearances at Moonee Valley and is now four from five at 1600m, with the lone defeat coming when he was a desperately unlucky third in last year’s Doncaster Mile.

Kavanagh is now eyeing off another Cox Plate attempt.

“He is a better horse this year, I'm pretty happy with him. He's still got a bit of improvement left in him too,” the trainer said.

“He's a good tough gelding and when he's on his favourite track, there aren't many horses around when he's on song who can beat him here.”

BECERRA (P$47,500 2009 Classic, 3f Al Maher-Possessed) graduated from maiden winner to stakes grade in one fell swoop when gunning down the favourite Sayahailmary to win the Listed Lindsay Park Guineas.

The filly broke her maiden status when winning by 5.5lengths on the Geelong synthetic track at her previous start and now looks set to be a player in the upcoming fillies classics, as this race has proven a good guide to races like the Edward Manifold and Thousand Guineas in recent times.

Becerra was offered for sale by Edinglassie Stud and is prepared by Lee Freedman. She gives Emirates Park stallion Al Maher repeat wins in the Guineas, with Majestic Music winning 12 months ago.

AVIENUS (P$28,000 2007 Premier, 5m Reset-Genova) later completed a Group 2 Moonee Valley double for Inglis graduates when dominating the Stocks Stakes.

The Mark Webb trained mare had shown great potential over the past 12 months and delivered on that promise when stalking a strong speed and then racing away in the straight.

“Weight for age probably wasn't ideal for her today but she is so tough and in a dogfight she doesn't lay down,” Webb said.

“The plan after today is the JRA Cup. We're just trying to get a run in the Caulfield Cup somehow.”

Also at Moonee Valley, Tony Noonan unearthed a potential Thousand Guineas contender when SUSSURO ($150,000 2009 Easter, 3f Pivotal-Hoh Dear) powered home to beat some classy fillies in the Curran Chemicals Handicap.

Sussuro is one of just six gallopers by Champion European sire Pivotal to race in Australia.
