The rising popularity of the Inglis Melbourne August Thoroughbred Sale continued again in 2013 with buyers snapping up over 300 lots on the eve of the breeding season and spring carnivals.
“City performed fillies and mares were secured by breeders throughout Australia and overseas during the past two days, which also included another strong session of race geldings and colts to all corners of the region,” said Inglis Melbourne Director Peter Heagney.
A relation to Black Caviar topped the sale. Offered by Eliza Park International as Lot 92 was Belleluia (Bel Esprit-Song of the Sun), a daughter of a three-quarter-sister to the outstanding producer Helsinge. After plenty of spirited bidding the close relation to Black Caviar was knocked down for $205,000 to an Ireland based client of Inglis’.
Stakes placed Danehill Dancer mare Storm Burst was sold to Michael Flannery Bloodstock WA for $138,000, while Group 3 winning Testa Rossa mare There’s Only One also made it to six figures, being purchased by Edinburgh Park NSW of an even $100,000.
Darley’s offerings were again well received by buyers who parted with $726,500 for the 34 racehorses offered, resulting in an average price of $21,368. They included Sonntag purchased by Henry Dwyer for $58,000 - the three-year-old would go on to win the 2014 Group 1 Queensland Derby.
In all 303 lots were sold at the 2013 August Thoroughbred Sale at an excellent clearance rate of 92%.
Gross receipts for this year’s Melbourne August Thoroughbred Sale totalled $2,947,300, up on 2012's sale which included the Wadham Park dispersal.
