Sale Overview

2014 Great Southern Sale catalogue

504 thoroughbreds were traded at an excellent clearance rate of 85% at the 2014 Inglis Great Southern Sale.

A new record average price was set for the 224 weanlings sold at $14,504, which is 44% up on 2013 and 61% higher than the average recorded in 2012. Adding to the success of the weanling sessions was the super clearance rate of 88%.

The average, median, gross and clearance rate for the broodmare, yearling and racing stock section of the sale all recorded significant increases on 2013 figures, similar to the sale's buoyant weanling section.

“The high clearance rates in Melbourne has always been a feature of these sales and that continued into the broodmare and racehorse section finishing with an 84% clearance following on from the weanling section’s 88% selling rate,” points out Peter Heagney, Inglis Director.

“We are delighted with the overall results with all figures showing an increase on last year. The move back to the original June date has obviously been well received by both buyers and sellers,” said Heagney.

A long term client of Inglis’ from Queensland purchased the top priced weanling at the 2014 sale (Lot 63), a colt by Foxwedge (by Fastnet Rock) from Ekleel, for $175,000 from the draft of Donnybrook Estates.

Weanlings from the first crop of triple Group 1 winner Helmet (by Exceed And Excel) sold extremely well. Basinghall Farm’s colt from Take All of Me (Lot 242) topped Day Two when selling for $100,000, while Yarran’s colt by Helmet from Umoya (Lot 254) made $90,000 to the bid of Ascot Farm NZ.

11 stallions had weanlings sell for $50,000 or more at the Great Southern Sale; Foxwedge, Helmet, Sebring, Stratum, Stryker, Beneteau, I Am Invincible, Equiano, Moshe, Toorak Toff and Wanted.

Mamahuhu (Lot 388) was the highest priced broodmare sold. The well related Flying Spur mare was sold in foal to Charge Forward by Glentree Thoroughbreds for $100,000 to Nick Columb's Tristarc Bloodstock.

The top priced lot on the third and final day of the Great Southern Sale was stakes winner Rare Diamond (Lot 443). Offered by Three Bridges Thoroughbreds the daughter of Redoute’s Choice was sold in foal to Wanted for $57,500 to Fesen Pty Ltd.

A total of 280 broodmares, stallions, yearlings, unbroken and racing stock was sold at the 2014 Great Southern Sale for $1,684,336, a 56% increase on 2013.

The 15% of stock offered that passed-in at the sale are available for sale via Inglis’ Make-An-Offer Service.

Following this year’s growth the Inglis Great Southern Sale will remain in its traditional June slot for 2015. The complete Inglis sales calendar for 2014/15 can be viewed at inglis.com.au
