Anevay Earns Diamond Shot

Racing and Sports - Saturday, 19 February 2011

Sydney filly Anevay has earned a shot at next weekend's Group 1 Patinack Blue Diamond Stakes after a dominant win at Flemington today.

The filly opened Lightning Stakes day in the Talindert Stakes – an 1100m dash up the straight - and her last chance to show trainer Tim Martin she should be running next week.

But she never gave her trainer and her followers cause for concern as she went straight to the front and kept running.

Heavily backed to start a short priced favourite, the filly secured a spot in the Blue Diamond and now only has to do well this week to take her place.

“I was very pleased with that,” Martin said.

“You're taking on a field of lightly raced horses and you don't know how good they are.

“She's very natural – just a fast horse.

“As long as she does well and pulls up well I'll definitely back her up. I'm definitely worried about Sepoy but she's one of the fastest two-year-olds I've ever had.”

Hall, who wasted hard yesterday to make the filly's 53kg, said Anevay showed excellent pace in her races and did relax well but admitted the Blue Diamond will be a far tougher assignment.

“She's very quick out of the gates and quick to relax and come under you,” winning rider Nick Hall said.

“It's (the Blue Diamond) a high pressure race and she'd have to do it both ends. And she's got to back up as well so she's got a lot in front of her.

“But if she pulls up good during the week I don't see why you wouldn't have a crack at a million dollars.”

Anevay is a $160,000 Inglis yearling by Exceed And Excel and is a half-sister to Todman Slipper winner Krupt.
