Another Bonus Goes Off at Canberra

Hot on the heels of Tokugawa’s Sandown win yesterday, another Inglis race series bonus went off today, with You’re Canny making a most impressive debut at Canberra.

The Gratz Vella trained YOU’RE CANNY ($40,000 2010 Classic, 2g Canny Lad-Techniques) took care of his purchase price in one fell swoop when winning the Inglis Black Opal Qualifier by two and a half lengths.

The $9750 first prize was boosted by the $50,000 Inglis Race Series bonus.

“I’m as thrilled as I’ve ever been. It was good for the owners, especially with the bonus involved,” Vella said.

“The horse is just going to keep improving for us. Since his trial at Randwick he has just advanced and wants to be a racehorse.

“His performance was outstanding because he got a bit lost when he straightened up, but the jockey kept him balanced and he won well.”

Vella said it was always his intention to spell You’re Canny after this race and set him for the Black Opal next year.

The trainer secured the youngster from the draft of Guntawang Stud at Classic this year. He is from the Group 3 and Listed winning Palace Music mare Techniques and becomes her third foal to race for as many winners.

It is the family of Oakleigh Plate winner With Me and the dual Group 1 winner Accomplice, who like today’s winner, was a son of Canny Lad.

The heat now gets turned up on the 2YO race series, with the youngsters running for $250,000 in the Inglis Nursery at Randwick on December 18. The following month another $250,000 goes on the line in the Inglis Classic, for graduates of the Sydney Classic Sale. Both of those races were won by the fairytale filly Chance Bye last season.

In Victoria, Premier graduates run for $250,000 in the Inglis Premier at Mornington on February 16.
