Another Classic Caulfield Guineas

4th Oct 2008

The outstanding strike rate of Inglis Classic graduates in the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas was enhanced further today when Whobegotyou led home an all-Inglis trifecta in the $1million Melbourne Racing Club feature.

WHOBEGOTYOU (P$17,500 2007 Classic, 3g Street Cry-Temple Of Peace) settled well back in the field, but in a carbon copy of his G2 Bill Stutt Stakes win, Michael Rodd made his run from the 600m, joined in approaching the turn and then raced away in the straight for another cavalier win.

Filling the minor placings were TIME THIEF ($2million 2007 Easter, 3c Redoute's Choice-Procrastinate) and VON COSTA DE HERO ($1.2million 2007 Easter, 3c Encosta De Lago-Piavonic).

The win gives Classic graduates three of the past six wins in the Guineas, following 2003 winner In Top Swing ($50,000) and 2006 hero God's Own, who topped the 2005 Classic Sale at $220,000.

Furthermore, Inglis graduates have now won the race in five of the past seven years.

2002 winner Helenus was an $80,000 Easter purchase, while last year's winner Weekend Hussler cost the same amount at the 2006 Melbourne Premier Sale.

Whobegotyou, who follows Typhoon Zed as Group 1 winning Classic graduates from Widden Stud drafts this season, was offered at a sale where progeny of former Darley shuttler Street Cry were in high demand.

Indeed, the Machiavellian stallion supplied two of the top three highest priced lots at the 2007 Classic – including the $350,000 sale topper - but it is the Mark Kavanagh trained bargain that has emerged as a leader among his generation.

Kavanagh is resisting the temptation to run in the Cox Plate and is adamant that Whobegotyou will continue to follow down the same path as Helenus, with the G2 AAMI Vase and G1 Victoria Derby his next two goals.

Darley had to settle for the minor placings in the Guineas with their valuable colts, but earlier their talented colt WILANDER ($625,000 2007 Easter, 3c Exceed And Excel-Scandinavia) enhanced his reputation when beating older horses in the Group 2 Schillaci Stakes.

A Group 3 winner as a two-year-old, Wilander is the third stakes winner for his sire this season.

The Barbara Joseph trained BELONG TO MANY ($20,000 2005 Premier, 5m Belong To Many-Foil) completed a great day for bargain priced Widden graduates when claiming the Listed Le Tan Stakes to round out the Caulfield program.

The mare was a winner of the G2 Sapphire Stakes last season and her earnings are now approaching the $300,000 mark after overcoming the widest barrier in the 1200m event.

The next opportunity to secure an Inglis youngster is at this month's Breeze Up and Racehorse Sale in Melbourne on October 26.
