Australian bred two year-old fillies fought out the finish of the Group I Allan Robertson Championship at Scottsville in South Africa on Saturday with victory going to Alboran Sea over Rich Girl to give former Coolmore shuttler Rock of Gibraltar (IRE) the quinella.

The Mike de Kock trained Alboran Sea made it two wins in as many starts when she surged clear to win the 1200 metre sprint by two and a quarter lengths.

Bred and offered for sale by Rosemont Stud, Alboran Sea was a $105,000 Inglis Premier purchase and is a sibling to stakes-placed Trafalgar Legacy and Light Express being the fifth winner from five to race from Lady’s Light (USA).

An import from a big American Black Type family, Lady’s Light has a weanling colt by Rosemont Stud’s Toorak Toff and was one of 51 mares covered by former world champion sprinter Starspangledbanner last season in his first year at Rosemont and appears to be in foal.

Runner-up in the race Rich Girl is prepared by Charles Laird for Markus Jooste and has already won two races this season including the Group III Strelitzia Stakes.

She was a modest $11,000 Inglis Premier II Session purchase for Livestock Traders from the draft of Chatswood Stud.

A three-quarter sister-in-blood to stakes-placed Tariks, she is the first winner for Miss Moguls, a half-sister by Giant’s Causeway (USA) to stakes-placed Wyndam Easy and Twin Peaks from the family of Magic Millions winner Catnipped.

Going back further, it’s also the family of Golden Slipper winner Overreach and Blue Diamond winner Reward for Effort, so she’s a filly with a lovely pedigree.

Alboran Sea is the 11th Group I winner worldwide for Rock of Gibraltar and comes from his last Australian bred crop of foals.

Another of Rock of Gibraltar’s Group I winners in Australian bred Seventh Rock also featured at Scottsville as the sire of two year-old colt Guiness, who won the Group I Sun Medallion Stakes.
