Those following the Dubai Racing Carnival were hoping to see a win last night for Aussie bred champion South African mare Igugu, but while third was the best she could do there was another big Australian victory and it was delivered by Flying Spur four year-old Mushreq in the Group II Al Fahadi Fort.
Second in the Group I Greyville Golden Horseshoe at two in South Africa, the Mike de Kock trained Mushreq has always shown above average ability and scored a good win two starts back at Meydan.
Mushreq powered clear under Paul Hanagan to win the 1600 metre turf feature by three and a quarter lengths from his stablemate Master of Hounds with stud failure Musir finishing fourth at his first run back after an aborted season at Coolmore Stud in Australia last spring.
"That was a second win on his fifth 2013 start for Mushreq who has been a revelation and keeps improving,” said de Kock.
"We will have to think about the Dubai Duty Free after that effort.”
Racing in the famous blue and white colours of Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Mushreq (pictured as a yearling) has won four of 15 starts and was bred in Australia by Shadwell and foaled and raised at Yarraman Park.
Consigned to the 2010 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, he was bought back at $350,000 for Shadwell and sent to South Africa.
The 88th stakes-winner for now retired sire Flying Spur, Mushreq is a half-brother to Macau stakes-winner Jazza Bell being from stakes-placed Jeune (GB) mare Alharir, a half-sister to the dam of Group I winner Rewaaya from the family of Snippets and Forensics.
Alharir has a yearling colt by Hard Spun (USA) that will be offered by Yarraman Park at the 2013 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale as Lot 511
