Autumn Yearling Sale - Day One

2nd Apr 2006

A COLT by El Moxie (USA) topped proceedings at Oaklands today as the opening session of the two-day Autumn Yearling Sale made a very healthy start.

Consigned by Basinghall Farm as agent the September born yearling fell to the bid of bloodstock agent Rob Roulston at $100,000.

The handsome bay is out of the Canonise mare Make The Grade, a family with which Roulston is very familiar.

“Obviously I thought he was the best colt in the sale,” Roulston said afterwards, “but we also bred the mare’s half-sister Oceanfast – dam of Alinghi, and another half-sister called Influent.”

The second top-price was $72,500 paid for a Good Journey filly sold on behalf of the Written Bloodstock syndicate earlier in the day. By coincidence the lot also had family connections for her purchaser David Lamond who was the buyer of the filly’s dam, the subsequent Group 2 placed Lady Cay for $260,000 at the 2000 Easter Yearling Sale.

The Marscay mare was then sold to the Written syndicate who campaigned her with trainer Ron Quinton.

“The mare was absolutely cracking and particularly unlucky not to win a Group race” said Lamond, “ I think this filly’s sire Good Journey was a good racehorse and he has good potential as a sire being from a well performed family.”

Lamond indicated his purchase was for a group of owners, although her trainer is as yet undecided.

Both the average and gross figures climbed significantly on last year’s corresponding session weighing in at $11,679 and $1,565,000, compared to $10,783 and $1,434,100 in 2005, representing gains of 8 per cent and 9 per cent respectively.
