Barnato Wins First Singapore 2YO Race For 2014

The first two-year-old race in Singapore for 2014 was conducted at Kranji on Sunday and in an ominous sign for his rivals Redoute’s Choice’s son Barnato ran away with the event in strong style.

Doubling as the first leg of the six-race S$1 million Singapore Golden Horseshoe Series, today’s 1000m race looked to be a bit short on paper for Patrick Shaw’s scopey gelding, but class prevailed.

“I felt the 1000m would be a bit sharp for him as a first-up race. He doesn’t look like a 1000m horse and we will send him out further, possibly up to a mile,” said trainer Patrick Shaw.

Barnato (Redoute’s Choice x Glimmers) certainly has the looks, pedigree and potential to go a long way in Singapore for his owners, the Saffa Stable. Winning jockey Vagner Leal was very impressed by Barnato’s debut victory in the 10 horse field.

“When you ride on a good horse like this, it’s very easy. There’s a lot of speed in this horse and he has a lot of potential,” said Leal.

A three-quarter-brother to top Australian sprinting filly Gold Edition, Barnato was purchased by Derek Brugman of Nordic Racing & Breeding for $300,000 from Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm at the 2013 Inglis Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale.

Being Australian bred and sold at auction as a yearling through Inglis the connections of Barnato collect a $30,000 bonus for winning the first leg of the Singapore Golden Horseshoe Series, which is sponsored by Aushorse, Inglis, IRT and Magic Millions.

Barnato’s breeder Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm will offer seven yearlings at the upcoming 2014 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale on 8, 9 & 10 April. Those entries include a colt from Barnato’s two-time Group 1 winning sibling Gold Edition to be offered as Lot 28.

IRT Juvenile Stakes – 1100m – Friday 4 April
Inglis Melbourne Stepitup Stakes – 1200m – Sunday 20 April
Magic Millions National Yearling Stakes – Friday 2 May
Inglis Sydney Better Life Stakes – Friday 9 May
Group 2 Aushorse Golden Horseshoe – Friday 16 May
