South Coast trainer Bede Murray is ‘King of the Provincials’ after winning the inaugural $300,000 Provincial Championship Series Final (1400m) on The Championships Day 2 at Royal Randwick today.
Murray ruled supreme with one of his trio of runners, Sure and Fast finishing powerfully along the fence to run out an easy winner from the Kris Lees-trained Electric Power. Early leader Oxford Poet weakened to finish third.
The Provincial Championships Series Final followed last Monday’s Country version and both concepts have attracted major interest right around New South Wales.
Provincial newspaper editors and sports editors were invited to ‘support their local horse’ as they headed to Royal Randwick, with TAB linking with The Championships in sponsoring the inaugural Country and Provincial Newspaper Challenges.
The regional newspapers supported their horse in both finals, with TAB donating $5000 to winners of the two finals. Cancer Council was the lucky recipient last Monday on behalf of Muswellbrook Chronicle, following Artlee’s popular victory in the Country Championships Final.
Central Coast Express is today’s winner of the TAB Provincial Newspaper Challenge, and sports editor, Steven Maher was ecstatic with the news $5000 is heading to their nominated charity, Central Coast Kids in Need Incorporated.
“We had our fingers crossed and this is fantastic that our paper will be contributing to this worthy cause. They’re a volunteer group that provides financial assistance to families of seriously ill Coast kids who have to go to Sydney/Newcastle hospitals for treatment.
“The Provincial Championships Series is an excellent initiative and we’d certainly like to pass on our genuine thanks to TAB for their backing of the challenge.”
