The winning margin was only a nose in the City Tattersalls Inglis Bonus at Randwick, but it was enough for Best Case to secure a $100,000 Inglis Race Series Bonus.
Best Case ($170,000 2012 Easter, 3g Savabeel-Ambitious) was coming into today’s 1600m event off a fourth placing at Group 2 level and ridden just behind the speed by jockey Christian Reith the improving three-year-old was able to get the cash, just.
Kirramosa dived up along the fence late, but Best Case stuck his head out to ensure the best result to the race. Vitello was a further half a length away in third place.
“I was confident in the horse, he might have just come to the end of his run in the last 25 meters but he’s gutsy,” said winning stable foreman Edward Cummings.
“Back in grade and up in distance did the trick today. There’s plenty of improvement in this horse, his coat hasn’t come through 100% and it’s been a long time between runs.
“He’s certainly a horse on the up and we’ll probably now look to something in Melbourne,” Cummings indicated.
Bred by Gartshore Bloodstock Ltd in New Zealand, Best Case was purchased by Anthony Cummings for $170,000 from the draft of Waikato Stud at the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Best Case is raced by P D L Horwitz, G G B Macdonald, M E Lazarus R J Lazarus, A Cummings Thbds (A&B Cummings), Botsky (N Botica) & Highland (A Falk).
The three-year-old had earned $33,130 in his four runs prior to Saturday’s race.
Today’s win earned connections an impressive $168,750 in one foul swoop thanks to a $100,000 Inglis Race Series Bonus and $20,000 BOBS Bonus on top of the normal $48,750 first place prizemoney.
