Brazen Beau kicks off Carnival with win in Champagne Classic

The all-conquering Chris Waller stable kicked off the Brisbane Winter Carnival with Brazen Beau taking out the Group 2 $175,000 Bollinger Champagne Classic (1200m) at Doomben today.

Brazen Beau will now head to the Sires Produce Stakes after winning Champagne Classic.

Brazen Beau ($6.50) with top Sydney jockey Nash Rawiller in the saddle came from just off the pace to score a comfortable one and three quarter lengths win from the fast finishing Looks Like The Cat ($8.50) who nosed out the favourite Shaumari ($3.50) for second.

Waller is looking for Brazen Beau to replicate the performance of his top two year old Pressday who was undefeated from three starts during the 2010 Brisbane Winter Carnival when he took out the Champagne Classic, the Group 2 $250,000 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) which was run at Eagle Farm and the Group 1 $500,000 T J Smith (1600m) at Eagle Farm, now run as the J J Atkins.

Stable representative Peter Muscatt said that there is still improvement in Brazen Beau as he heads towards the Group 2 $250,000 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes (1350m) at Doomben on May 24 and then onto the Group 1 $500,000 J.J. Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on June 7.

“Still a little bit of improvement to come and a great ride from Nash,” Muscatt said.

“He is very special, a bomb proof two year old. He will certainly go via the Sires and if he comes through that and if he looks like he will get the mile that is the way he will go.”

Like Pressday, Brazen Beau is a graduate of the Inglis Sydney Classic Yearling Sale. Brazen Beau was purchased by Ontrack Thoroughbreds for $70,000 from the draft of Murrulla Stud at the 2013 Classic Summer Book.
