Broken made it back-to-back Carlyon Stakes at Moonee Valley, but this time the veteran sprinter won it on the track not in the steward’s room.
Last year Broken was the beneficiary of a steward’s room protest decision that saw him elevated from second.
While Broken has won the Aurie’s Star and Carlyon Stakes back-to-back this season, trainer Darren Weir doesn’t have any lofty ambitions with the seven-year-old.
Weir said Broken, now a winner of $500,000, would head to Bobbie Lewis Quality (1200m) at Flemington on September 7.
He said the gelding thrived since his Flemington win and a jump out at Burrumbeet earlier in the week had him spot on for today’s $120,000 race.
“Since then I’ve been leading him off the pony up the hill at Ballarat and he’s been bouncing out of his skin,” Weir said.
“We knew he would run well, but to be honest this is a good surprise.”
Weir praised Nick Hall for his ride on Broken. “The ride won him the race,” Weir said.
Broken, a $13 chance, powered home to win by three-quarters of a length from Chosen To Fly, backed from $26 to $21, with a short half head to Golden Sunshine, $5.50, third.
Adamantium, supported from $3.20 to $3 favourite, speared to the front, but was swallowed up over the concluding stages to finish seventh.
Broken was purchased by Darren Weir for just $18,000 at the 2007 Inglis Melbourne Great Southern Weanling Sale from the draft of breeders Lindsay Park Stud.
Broken has had 35 career starts for nine wins and 14 placing’s, with prizemoney of $540,105.
