Broodmares and tried horses share the limelight in May (Late) Sale

Subtitle – purchased by one of Jacquinot’s part-owners to send to the new Widden-based stallion this coming breeding season – has topped today’s Inglis Digital May (Late) Sale, realising $225,000.

Offered by Coolmore and knocked down to Castle Bloodstock, Subtitle was purchased on behalf of Lindsay Maxsted, who enjoyed the thrills of Jacquinot’s racetrack career and is now looking to enjoy his career in the stallion barn.

“I’ve stayed in the ownership and wanted a high-quality mare to send to him first up and I think Subtitle is exactly that mare,’’ Maxsted said.

“You can always find these quality mares on Inglis Digital, every sale there is something there and I’m just thrilled to be able to buy Subtitle.

“She’s been a great producer already, with Rock a Group 3 winner and Group 1 placed and Femme Fireball a Stakes horse too so I’m confident she will continue to produce the right type of horse with a Jacquinot mating.’’

Subtitle was offered in foal to young Coolmore stallion Home Affairs, another lure for Maxsted to stretch his budget to secure the mare.

“I love Home Affairs, I think he’s going to be a standout stallion so to have one of his first foals coming in the next few months is very exciting,’’ Maxsted said.

Coolmore’s John Kennedy added: “It’s a fantastic result, she’s been a fabulous broodmare to Coolmore over many years and two of her past three foals have realised $400,000 and $300,000 at Easter and Classic respectively so I’m sure Lindsay is in for a treat with her.

“The team at Inglis as always has done a fantastic job in promoting not only Subtitle but also Little Miss Smiley, which we sold for $100,000 in this sale.

“Inglis Digital is such a powerful platform and one Coolmore uses regularly because it is so transparent and it’s a level playing field for buyers and sellers each and every sale.’’

Today’s second-top lot is headed to Singapore after Bevan Smith went to $150,000 to secure El Padrino.

Smith went to $290,000 to buy former Chris Waller-trained galloper Basquiat through Inglis Digital in November last year for the same client who he purchased El Padrino for.

Basquiat will line up as one of the favourites in Saturday’s Singapore Guineas, under his new racing name Pacific Warrior, luring the client to buy again.

Like Basquiat, the Ciaron Maher Racing-offered El Padrino will be trained by Michael Clements in Singapore and Smith hopes to have similar success with him.

“The client loves Inglis Digital because he’s been buying horses off the platform for the past 12 or so months and taking them to Singapore and having success, so he’s looking at every sale,’’ Smith said.

“It’s just such a great platform and great way for us to secure these horses at market value prices to go up to Singapore where they can perform really well.

“El Padrino, he just fitted the mould for up there – he’s already a Stakes winner, he’s by a stallion in Street Boss that we like and whose progeny are going well up in Singapore, he’s very clean and been well looked after by Ciaron Maher and Dave Eustace, he vetted out extremely well which is really important so we’re delighted to get him.’’

Maher said El Padrino’s connections were delighted with the result.

“The owners are rapt with the price, it’s right up there with where we hoped he might land,’’ Maher said.

“We had a lot of fun with him, he was a really good 2YO who won the Inglis Nursery at just his second start and then trained on to be Stakes placed at three.

“I’m sure he’ll be the ideal horse to go up to Singapore now and perform well for his new owners and we wish them all the best.’’

The sale’s third-top lot was the Hudson Conway-offered Sir Lamorak, who sold to Gold Coast trainer Adam Campton for $135,000.

Campton will transfer the galloper from Kris Lees’ yard to the Gold Coast later this week and hopes to run him at Eagle Farm on Queensland Oaks Day in 10 days.

“He’s been well looked after by Kris Lees and his team so we might send him around in a BM90 Saturday week in town, Kris and his stable gave him a glowing report so assuming he gets up here in good order as I suspect he will, that’s the plan at this stage,’’ Campton said.

“We bought a horse called Deepour off Inglis Digital just as I was starting out up here two years ago and he’s won four in a row now up here and really been keeping the stable name up in lights.

“Inglis Digital is something we look forward to every sale, we look through every catalogue, it’s great, so easy, very simple, we really enjoy it and to be fair, all the Inglis crew are great to deal with.’’

Subtitle, El Padrino and Sir Lamorak were three of seven horses to realise $100,000 or more in the May (Late) Sale – five racehorses and two broodmares.

The sale grossed $2,537,800.

Entries are now open for the June (Early) Sale, which will run from June 2-7.

Entries close at midnight next Wednesday, May 31.
