Honest galloper Budriguez brought up his biggest career win with a gutsy effort in today's Group 3 R A Lee Stakes (1600m) at Morphettville.

The gelding was ridden up early by jockey Justin Potter but once finding the front was able to control the race there.

Turning a couple clear, he kicked further ahead and looked home.

Majestic Music ran on strongly into second while Red Colossus, who was well back through the run, hooked to the outside and made good ground into third but never really threatened.

Sublimity got home from second last to finish fourth.

Budriguez , a four-year-old son of Al Maher, has raced just 14 times now for eight wins. Today's Group 3 win complements his first stakes success two starts back in the Listed City Of Adelaide Stakes.

Trainer David Jolly's instructions were to find the front then back off to have something in hand for the finish and Potter rode him to the letter.

“He's a very tough horse,” Jolly said. “He likes to get up and control it and it worked out well today.

“When I saw the draw (barrier 13) my heart sank a bit but he's a horse that you can do a little bit early on him and still have something at the finish.

“He's a great horse to train too. He just eats and works and loves his racing so it makes my job easy.”

Budriguez was just a $25,000 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale. He is a son of Group 1 Australian Guineas winner Al Maher from the handy sprinter Deni.

Today's win took his earnings to over $300,000.

The win continued a superb season for the Goolwa based Jolly, who now draws to a clear lead in the metropolitan trainers premiership with 27 wins, one ahead of the powerful Patinack Farm team of John Thompson.

It was the second win in the race for Jolly who claimed his first in 2005 with Sassbee.
