Buyer competition continued strongly on the third day of selling at the 2016 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale at Newmarket, building the clearance rate to an impressive 88% with local, interstate and overseas investors all adding to a diverse buying bench.
The average price has climbed an enormous 34% from 2015 to $63,695 with the number of mares selling for $350,000 or more almost double that of last year. Victorian clients have shown the most strength in the sale ring having secured 11 of the top 15 lots and over 120 mares in total.
This strong demand drove gross receipts for Broodmares sold over the past two days to more than $22 million, well up on the $17.5 million for the total sale in 2015, with a full day to come tomorrow.
The top price for day three of $460,000 was recorded for Group 3 winner Vergara (Lot 550), when Heritage Bloodstock’s Paul Guy on behalf of Blue Gum Farm outbid Rob Roulston for Rifa Mustang Pty Ltd. The four-year-old attracted significant interest after running a strong fourth behind Winx in the Group 1 Doncaster Handicap last month.
“She will be bred this season, but not before we give her a freshen-up and take her to Brisbane, she does well first up so we’re looking forward to seeing some results,” said Guy.
“We’re excited to get her, she’s out of a half-sister to Blue Gum’s sire Turffontein so we have a lot of respect for the family,” Guy said.
“Blue Gum were the leading vendor at Melbourne Premier this year and we are delighted to see the confidence they and other Victorian breeders including Yu Long investments, Sun Stud, Three Bridges Thoroughbreds, Musk Creek Farm, Rushton Park, Burnewang North Pastoral and Spendthrift Australia have in the future of their states breeding industry. They have invested in some high quality mares over the past two days” said Inglis National Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy.
“As an auction house we are here to sell horses for our clients and to achieve 88% for our vendors is very pleasing,”
“We have some outstanding prospects to offer tomorrow and we are confident of a strong conclusion to a very successful sale for our all clients,” D’Arcy added.
