Canny earn another big payday?

Racenet - Clinton Payne - Tuesday, 14 December 2010

Canberra juvenile You're Canny will be aiming for his second big payday from as many starts in Saturday’s $250,000 Inglis Nursery (1000m) at Randwick.

The Gratz Vella-trained two-year-old made an eye-catching debut at Canberra on Cup day, November 28, when he earned his connections $60,500 by winning the Inglis Bonus Black Opal Qualifier (1000m).

The gelding by Canny Lad out of the former top-class racemare Techniques, led all of the way and showed professionalism beyond his racetrack experience to record a 2-1/2 length win.

“Every time I have asked him for a little bit more he has given it to me,” Vella said.

“He raced like a real matured horse.”

Despite the supposed rise in class on Saturday, Vella is confident in his gelding’s ability to handle the metropolitan level of racing.

“Looking at the event, I give him a big chance,” he said.

“The way he has pulled up and his work has been excellent, so I am going into that race as happy as I could be with that horse who is ready to compete.

“What he has done up until now has all been good and I can't see him disappointing us on Saturday.

“We don't get the opportunity to go in a $250,000 race too often.”

Vella has secured the services of Kerrin McEvoy to partner You're Canny in the race won last year by fairytale filly Chance Bye.

Vella intends to give You're Canny a break after Saturday before he returns in preparation for his hometown feature two-year-old race at Thoroughbred Park on March 13.

“After this race he will have three or four weeks in the paddock and then, if all goes well, we'll bring him back for the Black Opal next preparation,” Vella said.
