Centennial Turns in Career Best

Centennial Park upstaged his more glamorous rivals in a stellar return to racing when taking the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Rosehill today.

Somewhat of a quiet achiever, CENTENNIAL PARK ($P140,000 2007 Easter, 5g Thorn Park-Trephina), took his earnings beyond $660,000, with this his seventh – and most important – win.

The David Payne trained gelding was previously a Group 3 and Listed winner. He has a great affinity with the Rosehill circuit, having now won six times at the venue.

Centennial Park was offered for sale by Windsor Park Stud, who have six yearlings catalogued for this year's Easter Sale - each of them by the emerging super sire High Chaparral.

Centennial Park’s win spoiled the return of HOT DANISH ($32,000 2005 Scone, 7m Nothin’ Leica Dane-Hot ‘N’ Breezy), but Sydney’s favourite mare still enhanced her remarkable record in finishing third.

The Les Bridge trained mare has now placed in 24 of her 30 starts, with 21 of those being in black type races.

Graduates of the famous Inglis Newmarket ring were also in the limelight on the other side of Bass Strait today.

MOURINHO ($36,000 2009 Classic, 3g Oratorio-Benevolent) returned to his right form when proving too classy in the Group 3 Tasmanian Derby.

The Peter Gelagotis trained gelding was an impressive winner at Moonee Valley on New Year’s Eve when rattling off good sectionals, before he knuckled over at the start and lost all chance at Flemington last time. But after jumping cleanly today, he enjoyed the run of the race behind the speed and proved far too good.

Offered for sale by Little Wych, he now boasts three wins for earnings of $150,000.

The Inglis Yearling sale series now turns to Melbourne, for the 2011 Premier Sale to be held over four sessions from February 28 to March 3.

It's then the turn of the Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale from April 5-7.
