Arrowfield Stud based Redoute’s Choice is currently the leading second crop sire in the country with progeny earnings more than double that of his nearest rival. The champion son of Danehill (USA) is a great favourite with buyers, so it was no surprise to see him lead the way here with three yearlings selling at an average price of $88,333. His highlight was the Widden Stud prepared colt from Later (USA), which fetched $170,000 making him the top priced colt of the sale.

English Derby winner Galileo (IRE) figured prominently with three youngsters returning an average of $73,000 including two very nice colts, which fetched $100,000 apiece. The well-regarded freshman is likely to be a major player for Coolmore at the Australian Easter Yearling Sale where more than 40 of his stock will go under the hammer.

Highly promising young sire More Than Ready (USA) enjoyed a sensational sale for Vinery Stud with 10 yearlings averaging $70,400, including a half-sister to stakes-winner Presently from Centaine’s Gift (NZ), which made $180,000.

Former shuttle sire Langfuhr (Can) was the real surprise packet, providing the sale-topper among nine yearlings that averaged $52,611. He was not available to Australian breeders last spring, preferring to remain in Northern America where he will stand the current season at a fee of $US30,000.

Yarraman Park Stud did well with their first cropper Magic Albert, who returned very good figures with 13 of his progeny selling at an average of $42,615. Denise Martin of Star Thoroughbreds came away with his top lot, paying $115,000 for a strongly built chestnut filly from Pagan Dance.

The Classic Yearling Sale has long been a happy hunting ground for Kiwi bloodstock agent Paul Moroney, who spent up big this year purchasing 11 yearlings by 11 different sires at a total cost of $465,500.

Moroney snapped up the Blue Diamond winner True Jewels from this sale in 2000 for just $28,000, so has a proven track record in the Classic bargain buying stakes.
