Classics puts a smile on Snowden's face

Racenet - Aaron Mills - Saturday, 18 June 2011

Well bred filly Classics finally made Peter Snowden smile when she took out the Saunders Insurance Brokers Handicap (1400m) at Rosehill on Saturday.

In what was a good day for three-year-olds taking on the older horses, Classics made it two wins from as many starts this preparation when scoring by more than two lengths.

"I was disappointed with her first up run,” Snowden said after the race. "She was ready to go at Canterbury and even though she won, I thought she should have won by a bigger margin.”

Snowden felt that despite the convincing win the best would not be seen from Classics until next year.

"We have always had a big opinion of her but she has been very slow maturing. Even looking at her now she is probably six months away,” he said.

"Her mother was a good mare who got better as she got older and I think as a four or five-year-old we will see this filly at her best.”

Classics’ dam Ancient Song won the Group I Salinger Stakes (1200m) down the Flemington straight as a four-year-old.

Jockey Josh Parr said Classics was "spot on” for the race, describing her as "a fine-tuned machine.”

Classics enjoyed a gun run throughout just behind the hot early speed set by General’s Sniper and Viva Las.

It was all over at the 200 metre mark as Classics forged to a clear margin. La Bella Luisa was second, while We Betcha continued trainer Chris Waller’s frustrating day when running third.

The market – The winner Classics eased out in betting from $4 to $6.
