The 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale got off to a confident start with 194 weanlings traded among a broad local and international buying bench at Newmarket on Sunday.
Bidding was strong throughout the day, particularly in the Platinum Session where 103 x-rayed weanlings were sold at an impressive average of $48,017, median of $31,000 and a clearance rate of 84%.
“Today’s results are a clear indicator to vendors that x-raying their premium weanlings and offering them in Sydney is a great way of giving buyers confidence to invest,” said Inglis’ Managing Director Mark Webster.
“There is plenty of strength in the market and we are pleased to see vendors that brought their better weanlings here get rewarded in the sale ring, which sets a great base on which to build this sale,” added Webster.
Topping the sale today from the Platinum Session was Lot 110, a striking colt by Medaglia d’Oro out of the unraced Anabaa mare, Kiss The Sun. The colt from the draft of Middlebrook Valley Lodge was secured for $230,000 by American bloodstock agent Roderick Wachman.
Two fillies by freshman sires shared the second highest price of $200,000. The first weanling by Pierro to be offered in Australia was sold through the draft of Newgate Farm and the filly (Lot 46) was secured by Chinese-based Yu Long Investments for re-offering at the 2016 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale.
Lot 105, a half-sister to multiple Group 2 winner Toydini from the first crop of Dubai World Cup winner Animal Kingdom, was snapped up by New Zealand’s Lyndhurst Farm for $200,000 when offered from the draft of Goodwood Farm. Other first season sires All Too Hard and Ocean Park also had weanlings sell up to $80,000 today.
Leading the sires’ table by both average and aggregate (3 or more sold) is Coolmore’s star freshman Pierro. All three of his weanlings offered were sold for a total of $430,000, averaging $143,333. Snitzel continued his outstanding run this year selling three at an average of $118,333, while Sebring had three of his weanlings sell for an average of $91,667. The progeny of All Too Hard and I Am Invincible averaged $72,500 (4 for $290,000) and $42,900 (5 for $214,500) respectively.
16 weanlings were sold as part of Ruane’s Unreserved Dispersal for a total of $$633,500, headed by two Sebring fillies; Lot 145 (ex Break Card) that sold for $120,000 to Milburn Creek Stud and Lot 147 (ex Marchelle Belle) which sold to Martin Byrne Bloodstock for $115,000.
Newgate Farm leads the vendors’ table by average (3 or more sold) selling 5 at an average of $68,500. Also averaging over $50,000 on the first day are Sledmere Stud (5 at $57,500), Bell View Park Stud (4 at $56,750), Rheinwood Pastoral Co (5 at $52,000), and Rosemont Stud (4 at $50,750).
Expert pinhooking operation Musk Creek Farm finished at the top of the buyers table on average and aggregate, purchasing three lots for a total of $300,000. Also from Victoria, Graebar Park follow closely having outlaid $273,000 on 8 Lots, while New Zealand’s Paul Willetts spent $246,000 on 8 Lots. Other buyers to take home three or more weanlings include Gainsborough Lodge, Russell Clarke, Rushton Park, Allan Fitzgerald, Brian Smith, Heritage Bloodstock, Jorson Farm, Phillip Corr and Sona Bloodstock.
Day Two of the auction will kick off at 10.30am starting with Select Broodmares Lots 272 to 470, which includes 25 mares and two stallion shares from Ruane’s Unreserved Dispersal.
The remaining three days of the 2015 Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale will be broadcast on Inglis Sale Day Live, plus Online Bidding and Make-An-Offer will again be available. Horses passed in during today’s session are available for sale via the Inglis Make-An-Offer Service.
