The Scone Advocate - Grahame Timbrell - Thursday, 23 April 2009
BROTHERS Luke and Mack Griffith will both continue towards the $100,000 Inglis Challenge for two-year-olds on Scone Cup Day, May 15, despite their respective horses being beaten at Taree last Tuesday.
The Mac Griffith trained Pretty Useful (Darryl McLellan) ran second to Honourable Aussie in the Two Year Old (1250m) but the Luke Griffith trained We Sing We Dance (Peter Graham) finished seventh in the field of eight.
However neither trainer is placing too much credence on those runs.
The track was rated a heavy 10 and three races later the remainder of the meeting was abandoned.
Both trainers said their horses would go into the Inglis Challenge without another run.
Pretty Useful, although beaten three-and-a-quarter lengths, would have derived a lot of benefit from the run.
“That was a pretty hard run and it will have topped him off nicely,” Mack Griffith said.
“He should peak for the Scone race.”
Luke Griffith said the run by his horse should be forgotten.
We Sing We Dance missed the start by atleast two lengths and Graham then hunted the horse around the field.
He was poised behind the leaders at the top of the straight but the hard run took its toll in the straight.
“He won’t need another run after that effort in those conditions,” Luke said.
“That was the equal of two races.”
Prertty Useful, by Youthful Legs, was bought by Mack Griffith for $16,000 while We Sing We Dance, by Danasinga cost Luke $13,000.
Another horse eligible for the Inglis Challenge, Skydome, was scratched because of the conditions. But has been nominated for Grafton on Monday.
Sunday’s Tamworth Cup will have a big bearing on the make up of the field for the Listed $110,000 Emirates Park Scone Cup (1600m) on May 15.
The majority of the 30 horses nominated for Tamworth are on track for the Scone Cup including the Scone trained With A Chance and the Muswellbrook trained Newton’s Rings, which is being aimed at his second successive Scone Cup.
