Cups king Bart Cummings to be honoured with state funeral in Sydney

ABC News - Monday, 31 August 2015

Racing legend Bart Cummings will be honoured with a state funeral at St Mary's Cathedral in Sydney next Monday.

The 87-year-old trainer, famous for his domination of the Melbourne Cup, died in the early hours of Sunday morning.

His son Anthony said on Sydney radio on Monday that the family would accept New South Wales Premier Mike Baird's offer of a state funeral.

"I think it will be at the cathedral next Monday," Anthony Cummings told Sky Sports Radio.

"The details will be worked out today."

The Australian Turf Club confirmed the state funeral will be held on Monday, September 7 from 10:00 am at St Mary's Cathedral

Thousands are expected to attend to pay tribute to the Cups King.

Cummings won the Melbourne Cup 12 times, seven more than his nearest rival.

Two years ago, as his health was deteriorating, Cummings formed a training partnership with his grandson James.

And even on the afternoon of his death it appeared the Cummings dynasty would continue to prosper with the stable scoring two winners at Wyong on Sunday.
