Debutant’s golden bonus

Racing Victoria - Saturday, 12 January 2013

Ms Funovits (pictured) lands her owners a significant prize with a gutsy debut victory.

Malua Racing-trained two-year-old Ms Funovits got her career off to a flying start, landing her owners $83,000 in prize money for her victory in the $80,00 Better Beyond Plate (1000m).

With a $20,000 VOBIS Gold bonus on top of $30,000 worth of Super VOBIS bonuses and the $48,000 winner’s cheque, it proved a lucrative start to the filly’s racing career.

The filly, a daughter of Reset, lead from start to finish for Glen Boss with Malua Racing head trainer John Sadler admitting the stable never expected her to be up and going as a two-year-old.

“Troy (Racing Manager Troy Corstens) text me during the week asking if I was sure that I wanted to run her as he thought she should be going to the paddock,” Sadler said.

“I said that she’s shown me no reason to turn her out and it was a very pleasing result.

A half-sister to Rick Hore-Lacy’s talented Chase the Rainbow, Sadler said Ms Funovits would almost surely head the paddock ruling out a challenge at the $1 million Blue Diamond Stakes.

“We all stand here with two-year-old’s and say that they’re going to get better but she will,” he said.

“It’s just a matter of what we do with her now, she’ll go to the paddock it just depends how long.”

Sadler said he could take no credit for the purchasing the filly, who is part-owned by prominent owner Phil Sly, paying tribute to Corstens’ judgement.

“Troy’s actually becoming an outstanding judge of yearlings, I remember him texting me before he bought her saying she was just an absolute standout,” he said.

Sent out a $7 chance in the betting, Ms Funovits showed plenty of early speed jumping straight to the front for Boss before appearing under severe pressure as the field entered the course proper.

After initially appearing as though the David Hayes-trained Mount Zero ($4.20) would go straight past her, Peter Moody’s Thermal Current ($3.80F) then looked home for all money over the concluding stages as it flew down the outside.

However Ms Funovits wasn’t to be denied, surging again on the fence to kick back and win by a head on the line.

The win was Boss’ 37th for the season taking his lead at the top of the Melbourne premiership table to 12 over nearest rival Luke Nolen on 25.
